How was it to encounter a new musical environment and a different teaching culture?
It was really fun to experience a different learning environment, I also noticed big differences in how people prepared for rehearsals and projects. It was exciting to see how different traditions and methods affect both playing, and learning together.
How do you think this experience will affect you as a musician in the future?
The most important thing I take with me is the importance of always being well prepared and punctual. Being “on time” means for me to show up at least 15 minutes before the rehearsal starts. This experience has made me even more aware of how much professionalism and preparation matter in a musical community.
What have you taken home with you – both musically and personally?
Musically, I feel that I became better at leading the group, something I previously found difficult. Personally, I got to know many nice and committed musicians who share the same passion for music as I do.
Would you recommend exchange to other students – and why?
It really depends on where you are in your studies. Exchange is not necessarily right for everyone at all times, so I would recommend talking to your teacher first to find out if it is the right time and place.
What are your tips for others who get the opportunity to go on an exchange?
Come well prepared and have an open mind! Work hard and be goal-oriented, and seize every opportunity to learn. It is a unique chance to develop both as a musician and as a person.
