Guidelines for the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Purpose

These guidelines are intended to promote the responsible and transparent use of AI tools in student work while safeguarding the principles of academic integrity, data privacy, and information security.

Permitted Use of AI

Students may use AI tools for the following purposes:

• Brainstorming and developing ideas.
• Structuring assignments.
• Language editing and translation.
• Generating suggestions for research questions, outlines, or wording.
• Coding and technical assistance in programming courses, where explicitly permitted.

AI tools must not be used to:

• Generate complete assignments or examination submissions that are presented as the student’s own work.
• Replace academic sources or proper source citations.
• Circumvent requirements for independent work or assessment.

As a student at The Barratt Due Academy, you are fully responsible for the content you submit, regardless of whether AI tools have been used. AI should support, not replace, your own understanding, judgement, and academic effort.

Citation and Acknowledgement of AI Use

When AI tools are used in coursework, students must provide the following information:

• Identify the AI tool(s) used.
• Describe the purpose of using the AI tool(s).
• Explain how the AI-generated output was reviewed, revised, or otherwise incorporated into the final work.
• Ensure that the use of AI is acknowledged and cited in accordance with the requirements of APA 7th edition.

These questions must be completed and submitted in a separate form together with the assignment.

Privacy and GDPR

Students must not enter personal data, sensitive information, or copyrighted material into publicly available AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, or similar services.

Recommended practice:

• Use AI tools approved by the Academy. (Further information will be provided.)
• Always consider whether the material being processed is subject to data protection legislation.
• If in doubt, contact your supervisor or the Data Protection Officer.

Assessment and Sanctions

Failure to comply with these guidelines may constitute academic misconduct and will be handled in accordance with the Academy’s regulations on academic integrity.

Academic misconduct may result in one or more of the following consequences:

• Invalidation of an examination or assignment.
• Suspension from the Academy for up to two years.
• Loss of the right to sit examinations at all Norwegian universities and university colleges for the same period.

These sanctions are authorised under the Norwegian Universities and University Colleges Act, which empowers higher education institutions to impose sanctions in cases of academic misconduct and breaches of academic regulations.

Guidance and Training

The Academy will provide:

• Courses and guidance on the critical and responsible use of AI.
• Information about the ethical and legal aspects of AI use.
• Resources to support source criticism, information literacy, and academic writing.
