From Practice Room to Concert Hall
Master’s student Blanka Hillerud shares her experiences from orchestra practice with the Oslo Philharmonic.
What were your expectations before starting your orchestra practice?
I remember the first time I went to the Oslo Concert Hall and listened to the Oslo Philharmonic. It was the summer of 2023, and both the concert and the hall made a huge impression on me. That’s why it was so exciting to return to the concert hall – but this time to play in the orchestra and give someone else the same experience I had!
What was it like meeting the orchestra for the first time?
The cello section was very welcoming, so even though I was a bit nervous before the first rehearsal, I managed to relax and focus on the music.
How does it feel to play side by side with professional musicians?
First and foremost, it’s a lot of fun to play with professional musicians because the level of music-making is so high. It’s also very educational to sit next to a cellist who has played all kinds of orchestral repertoire and can share lots of tips and tricks about the pieces we’re working on.
Can you describe a particular rehearsal, concert, or moment that made an impression on you?
One moment I remember well was when we played Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 with Jukka-Pekka Saraste. The symphony is both colorful and intense for the orchestra to perform, and when we played it at our first concert, it took less than ten seconds after the final chord before the entire audience stood up and applauded. It’s one of my favorite concerts so far.
What have you learned the most from during your practice period?
When playing in an orchestra, it’s important to blend your sound with the other instrumentalists in your section, but it’s equally important to play out and contribute a colorful character when needed. I’ve also spent a lot of time developing my orchestral vibrato.
Finally, what would you say to students considering applying for orchestra practice?
Apply! It’s so much fun and incredibly educational to play with the Oslo Philharmonic. I’ve gained so much inspiration from the musicians and conductors, which has influenced my own practice. I can highly recommend applying for orchestra practice!
