Teaching and Learning Methods
Musical Analysis is intended to provide students with insight into different approaches to musical analysis. The course aims to develop a fundamental understanding of important compositional principles and elements, and of how these have been employed in music over the past three to four centuries. It also places particular emphasis on the practical application of music-theoretical knowledge acquired during the first and second years of study.
Students who have successfully completed the course are able to:
- identify relationships between linear and harmonic processes.
- reflect on the development of musical forms and genres.
- understand and discuss different types of formal schemes and construct such schemes for specific works.
- apply music-theoretical knowledge and skills to identify and discuss aesthetic, historical, formal and stylistic features of a musical work.
- apply music-theoretical knowledge and skills to their creative understanding and interpretation of a musical work.
- discuss a musical work, whether through listening or score study, from different analytical perspectives, and demonstrate proficiency in functional harmonic analysis using Roman numerals, harmonic functions and chord symbols.
