Music History I
Course Overview

- Prerequisites: Successful completion of the entrance examination for the four-year Bachelor’s Programme in Music Performance
Learning Outcomes
Students who have successfully completed the course are able to:
- communicate in writing and orally about music and musical issues.
- identify the defining characteristics of different historical periods and recognise specific stylistic features in musical compositions.
- apply the terminology of the discipline.
- reflect on music history in relation to the repertoire studied on their principal study instrument.
- identify characteristic stylistic features of selected composers and the historical periods and cultural contexts they represent.
- place works from the standard repertoire within a music-historical context through informed argumentation and justify their classification.
- demonstrate a basic knowledge of the standard repertoire.
- explain the main developments in the history of musical instruments, with particular emphasis on their principal study instrument.
Teaching and Learning Methods
The course focuses on the Western art music tradition. A course in academic writing forms part of the Music History component and is offered at the beginning of the autumn semester.
Teaching includes:
- An overview of the main developments in Western art music from antiquity to the present day.
- A survey of major historical periods, composers and musical genres.
- Discussions based on historical sources and analytical study of selected works.
- An introduction to broader aesthetic and philosophical perspectives on music.
- Connections between music history, musical examples and the students’ principal study repertoire.
