Sigyn Fossnes is an award-winning and Spellemann Prize-nominated violinist and chamber musician with extensive teaching experience. Many of her former students have won prizes in competitions and music championships.
She trained as a violinist at the Norwegian Academy of Music, the Guildhall School of Music in London, and the University of Oslo.
Fossnes has been employed by the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra and has been an active chamber musician in several ensembles, including the Ametri String Quartet and Ensemble Ernst, which regularly tour in Norway and across Europe. She has been nominated twice for the Spellemann Prize and in 2005 was honored by the Norwegian Composers’ Association with the Performer of the Year award for the CD Tightrope Walker, a critically acclaimed and Spellemann-nominated recording of new music made in collaboration with pianist Einar Henning Smebye. With the Ametri String Quartet, she was also nominated for the Spellemann Prize in 2002. In 2010, she released a CD in collaboration with pianist Else Olsen S.
Many of Fossnes’ students have received awards in competitions and music championships. She has taught for many years at the Valdres Summer Symphony and also teaches at the Norwegian Academy of Music. Additionally, she gives lectures and masterclasses at Chetham School of Music in Manchester, Musikakademi Vänersborg, and the Lisbon Music Academy in Portugal. She has also taught in Hanoi and Brazil, and since 2011 has been Resident Musician at the Abermusicfest festival in Wales.
Sigyn Fossnes joined Barratt Due Institute of Music in 1998 as the leader of the Children’s Orchestra and has been an associate professor since 2010. She is the section leader for strings at Unge Talenter and conductor of the Barratt Due Junior Ensemble.
