Roeland Henkens is originally from Belgium but lives in Oslo, where he is Principal Trumpet of the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet. In 2019 and 2020, he also served as Assistant Conductor at the same institution. He is now one of two Assistant Conductors with the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra.
He holds a master’s degree in trumpet from the Frankfurt Conservatory and is currently studying conducting at the Norwegian Academy of Music.
Roeland has been Guest Principal Trumpet with orchestras in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, the United Kingdom, Norway, Sweden, and Finland, and has given masterclasses throughout Europe.
His conducting career has led to invitations from Brussels Philharmonic, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, PhilZuid, the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet, Armenian State Symphony Orchestra, Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra, Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, the Norwegian National Youth Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Minsk, and the Ataneres Ensemble.
As an instrumentalist, Roeland has also gained international recognition. He has won First Prize and the Musicality Award at the Concours International de Musique de Chambre de Lyon with the Eburon Brass Quintet, the trumpet category of the Aeolus International Competition for Wind Instruments in Germany, as well as the Belgian cultural prize awarded by the city of Beringen.
Henkens teaches trumpet at Musikk på Majorstuen and Unge Talenter at the Barratt Due Institute of Music.
